Book Publishing Resources

Today is Thursday, and I don’t know what that means to you, but to me it means Kris’s blog day. Kristine Kathryn Rusch, bestselling author and publishing insider, uploads The Business Rusch blog every Thursday. Thousands of us in the book publishing industry pop into it as soon as we’ve poured that first cup of coffee. It is essential reading.

Why these blogs, you may ask?

Because the world of publishing morphs so fast these days — after so many decades of entrenched gatekeeping — that it’s a challenge to keep up. My method of meeting that challenge? Pick some online mentors and, like a puppy in training, follow their every post.

I’m sharing my top four here; if you are self-publishing or if you are being published through an empowering publisher such as Lucky Bat Books, these are some of the top industry minds you’ll want on your blog feeds.

The Business Rusch

I mentioned this one already and now that I am through that cup of coffee, I’ll fill in the details. The Business Rusch — see a list/link of her publishing blogs here — is a treasure trove of current info on publishing, covering topics from what to watch out for in agent and publishing contracts, to sneaky publishing tactics, to how to get off your butt and write. Or, better yet, how to get on it. Start here and you will have better than a publishing credential. You’ll have the real info.

Dean Wesley Smith

The other half of the Rusch and Smith team, Dean Wesley Smith is also a bestselling writer and a publishing giant. Check out his website for even more insights into publishing.  He runs (with Kris Rusch’s involvement) publishing workshops both online and in person in Lincoln City, Oregon. He’s constantly updating info on publishing, offers his book, Killing the Sacred Cows of Publishing, online. And you’ll find, if you a dig a bit, wonderfully specific info on how to price ebooks and other details of publishing.

The Passive Voice

Sometimes short bits, sometimes longer and often presenting guest appearances by those in publishing, The Passive Voice is that blog to read for some of the latest jabs and counter-jabs in publishing, and also for nudges to your thinking.  You’ll find quotes, words of the day, advice and those industry insider warnings and insights. Recent quote of the day: Being a writer is a very peculiar sort of a job: it’s always you versus a blank sheet of paper (or a blank screen) and quite often the blank piece of paper wins. ~ Neil Gaiman

The Shatzkin Files

Mike Shatzkin likes details, data and numbers, and he shares out what he discovers about Amazon, marketing, and through all, about digital changes in the marketplace. He exhausts me with his long, detailed posts and I love him for it! He’s one of the leaders you’ll find at conferences and quoted for his insights into trends. He keeps me thinking about the larger issues in publishing.

And there you have it, my top four. I pop into other blogs, too, of some of my favorite writers, on general marketing, and, for fun, blogs about travel and nature.  If you’ve got a blog you love, tell me about it. I’m a reader, always in search of the next good story.
